Seven ways retirees can control their winter budget

As the nights get colder and the heating clicks on a little earlier each evening, we know many of our retired members are starting to feel the squeeze of rising winter costs. Our latest research shows that outgoings are set to jump by around 20% this season so it’s no wonder so many retired frontline workers, NHS staff, teachers and social care professionals are worried about heating bills and everyday essentials. Don’t worry as we’re here to help!
We’ve teamed up with consumer champion, Vicky Parry, to share seven simple and savvy ways to feel more in control of your winter budget, without cutting back on the things that bring you joy. From creative shopping to stacking deals, we want to help you stay warm, stay positive and still treat the people you love this festive season.
1. Check discount eligibility
“Many large chains offer retiree discounts, so always check what offers are available. If you’re retired from the emergency services, NHS, social care sector, teaching community and the armed forces, don’t forget that you’re eligible for a Blue Light Card, which unlocks big savings on everyday costs including the essentials.”
2. Bulk Buy and freeze
“Don’t underestimate the power of freezing to reduce costs on the essentials. Buy seasonal produce, meat, or even bakery items in bulk when they’re discounted, then freeze. You can even freeze herbs in olive oil cubes or leftover bread for toast – small moves that save a lot over time.”
3. Use food shopping discounts creatively
“Stack deals by combining loyalty points, cashback apps or membership discounts. Retirees who plan weekly shopping or online purchases around cashback offers can quietly save hundreds a year.”
4. Consider switching energy providers
“It’s easier than you might think to switch energy providers, so it’s well worth looking into the savings alternatives are offering. If you are eligible for discounts and memberships such as Blue Light Card, then look for switching bonuses and additional savings on things like installation and servicing.”
5. Day Out discounts
“Those wanting to make savings for family outings during the festive period - look at deals like cheaper annual Merlin passes, or last minute theatre tickets. For maximum savings, call to ask about senior midweek rates and stack your other perks and discounts such as your Blue Light Card.”
6. Embrace “Time Banking”
“Offer your skills (baking, dog walking, sewing, bookkeeping, etc.) in exchange for time credits that you can spend on services you need. It’s a growing social movement in the UK and a brilliant way to cut costs and stay active.”
7. VAT Free Devices
“Did you know that if you have a long term chronic condition or disability, you could qualify for VAT-free items? That’s because the items might qualify as a medical device, aid, or adaptation. It can make a huge difference to continuing to live independently as things can become much more affordable.”
