Every year, we see the same glossy ads telling us that Mother’s Day needs to be big, expensive and over-the-top. But when we asked mums in the Blue Light Card community to share their perfect Mother’s Day, the answers weren’t about luxury gifts or pricey restaurant bookings. They were about simplicity, time together and feeling appreciated.
Because for many mums, the best part of Mother’s Day isn’t what you spend, it's about who you spend it with… especially when shifts and rotas can often mean you miss out on those special family moments.
That’s why we’ve pulled together different ways you can treat your Mum to a day full of joy and memories, all whilst doing it for less.
One theme that came up again and again was freedom from the usual Mum workload. For most mums, that means not being the one who plans, organises or keeps everything running. It means waking up gently instead of racing through chores, school lunches or schedules.
“Mother’s Day for me is just being ‘me’ for the day with no Mum duties!!” – Rachel, Education sector
It doesn’t take a big gesture – it just takes one thing: giving them a break. The good news is that a few of the BLC mums we spoke to had VERY specific ideas we can all use as inspiration:
“Woken with a cup of coffee, hugs with the children, not having to think about anything chores or responsibility related for the whole day.” – Yasmin, NHS
“My ideal day would be getting some flowers, not having to cook and having lunch or dinner with my grown-up children. As long as my grown children are around, my day would be made!” – Benedicta, NHS
And honestly? It’s easier than you might think. Planning ahead and agreeing that no one cooks, cleans or makes decisions for a day could save stress for everyone, especially your Mum.

The magic of Mother’s Day often comes down to time, especially for those of you with busy lives. Whether children have flown the nest, live far away, or have their own families to juggle, mums crave being in your presence.
“Spending time with my family, maybe go out for a walk. No housework for that day, just relaxing.” – Nicola, Police
That’s all it needs! A simple walk, a coffee catch-up, or a picnic in the park is the perfect way to spend time together without the cost of an activity.
“All my children at home, and we all sit down for lunch with my parents. Perfect.” – Sue, Police
It’s not about fancy tables and three-course menus, it’s just about being present in a way that feels relaxed whilst creating memories.
Plus, you can make these lowkey activities cost even less with Blue Light Card Shopping Cards. Maybe it’s a picnic packed full of M&S goodies, an afternoon tea made at home from Tesco, or it even could be a coffee and cake somewhere local – whatever you opt for, getting a Shopping Card to cover the expense can save your wallet a bit of extra money.

Mother’s Day can also be a chance to celebrate all the mum figures in your life, not just one moment in the day.
“Mother’s Day for me is visiting my mother and mother-in-law in the morning then normally having lunch somewhere with my partner and daughter. We normally follow this with a dog walk somewhere.” – Donna, Home Office
It’s a lovely reminder that Mother’s Day doesn’t have to revolve around a single lunch booking or just be a personalised card. It can be a day that moves gently from one meaningful moment to another – starting with your own little ones, then spending time with your mum, step-mum, grandmother or any of the women who’ve helped shape your life.
A slow morning, a family film followed by a catch-up over tea and cake; it’s about sharing the day, not rushing through it. And spreading things out can make the day feel more relaxed, whether that’s breakfast at home, a walk in the park, or late lunch somewhere local using your Blue Light Card to save.
“A perfect day would be tea and breakfast in bed with my daughter… a lazy day, home movie even, afternoon tea with mum… just to feel a bit special and show mum I love her.” – Emma, NHS

Looking across all of these stories, Mother’s Day isn’t about how much you spend, it’s about how much thought, love and affection you show.
Whether that’s: breakfast in bed instead of crowded restaurants, a family walk followed by a picnic or simply not doing housework for a day, the intention behind what you do is what stays with Mums.
And should you buy gifts or go out for some food, your Blue Light Card can help make them that bit more affordable.
Here’s to all the hard-working Mums in our amazing community – and making sure you all get the Mother’s Day you deserve!
